What is Street Dance?

The term street dance emerged in Indonesia, probably around the early or mid 1990s, after the entry of hip hop to Indonesia. I say probably because I have not found references about exactly when this term is used in Indonesia, but I can confirm that at least this symbiotic dance street hip hop culture in Indonesia. It is quite evident from the flow of street dance that developed in Indonesia first, like bboying, which is taking roots of hip hop culture. Although there are also popping stemming the flow of funk music, but hip-hop then absorb this flow to be assimilated in it. Because of this reason that later lead to the assumption that the street dance = bboying in Indonesia, although there might be some debate about the proper use of this term, good and true.

So what is street dance? Street dance is a general term used to describe the style / flow of dance that developed and evolved outside the dance studio (is it right if I menerjemhkannya as a dance studio?). This context means done in the open like city parks, streets, tennis at school or at nightclubs. Keep in mind that street dance first appeared and flourished in New York, United States, so it may be a difference when we call the art of dance that developed in the studio or any studio. Types of non-street dance this dance, among others, such as ballet, ballroom, latin, salsa, etc.. In this case a variety of traditional dance in Indonesia is not included in the category of street dance beginning of its development, although not in the studio or studio. Except when it later emerged a new flow from Indonesia named dance the traditional way maybe we can just compete with the street name of this American dance.

Street dance is also known as vernacular dance. Vernacular more or less can be interpreted as using intuition / instinct. Furthermore we can interpret the vernacular dance (street dance) is a style of dance that is not circumscribed by a particular form of expression and freedom of movement and rhythm of music available. This definition suggests that improvisation is one important element in the street dance. This improvisation and freedom of expression, which in turn triggered the emergence of many styles / flow in the street dance. Even the originality which is the result of improvisation and individual interpretation of music to get a prime spot as compared to imitate the style or movement of other dancers street. So when we use the term street dance means we will refer to various kinds of flow of dance that developed out of dance studio and not just one type of flow only.
Street dance, as described above, is basically all dance that grows and develops outside the studio. In addition to improvisation which the soul of the street dancer, street dance is also known to form a single social system itself that can bring the individuals in it in a positive direction. Compared with other flow dance, street dance is very thick with the social system, in this case related to the interaction with the audience and dancers with other dancers. This explains why all styles of street dance growing up in the Cypher circle (a circle for each individual and then advanced into the center circle and show the style of dance), usually have a crew or incorporated in a particular community, and explains why the only street dance have the term "battle".
Others familiar with the term derivative dance competition, which usually (though not necessarily) be assessed by the jury, and they fought on the basis of skill, precision of style, compactness, etc. depending on how "perfection" is defined by the flow of the dance. But at the street dance, in the process of creation has a more competitive system of "social" where the audience, and even the other dancer could be a jury. Hopefully I'm not wrong, but my knowledge of street dance was the first to know the scoring system based on the applause, the audience screams, etc.; relating to the enthusiasm of the audience. Due to the very social system, maybe other people will judge this rating system is weird because it seems so subjective, there are no standards, etc.. But that's where the spirit of street dance can continue to grow under the foundation of improvisation and a sense of high social.
Two people from the street dance is what I think causes the street dance continues to grow even create some new streams. No one criticized that it should not be, no "Street Dance Expert" who criticize that "Oh, it's not because of damage to the basic order of street dance, etc.". All because of street dance based on improvisation and social systems. During the improvisation can be accepted by the Social System of the Large Family Street Dance around the world, it gives birth to new children from the street dance whatever it's called.
Quite a lot of dance styles including street dance in this start of bboying, popping, locking, krumping, tutting, liquid, housing, Melbourne shuffle, c-walking, jumpstyle, hip hop dance etc.. From each force that was there and then have children that can flow into a distinctive style, such as animation and robotting from popping or creep walk, clown walk crown walk and of c-walking. Each - every one of these styles differ from each other and have their own uniqueness. Bboying / bgirling probably the most famous example of this style of street dance because the movements are full of acrobatic tricks on the body so much to attract young people to learn it. Popping, locking, krumping, tutting, liquid, and wacking has its own class and are often combined and used as the basis for the choreography of hip hop or what we call today with urban coreography. While housing, shuffle, c-walking, and jumpstyle is a style which focuses on footwork movements. Actually there are also categorization based on the style of hip hop and funk, but it could be a separate discussion that is long enough to pin down along with the details of the rules and the uniqueness of each of these styles of street dance.
So, what should we do if we want to start to learn street dance? Which style is best suited or perhaps that should be first studied for a beginner? Actually there is no fixed rule which style is for the beginner or special ritual to learn street dance. Each style has its own difficulty level, so that what we need first is a strong desire, if not we call it passion. Start with what we ourselves love, no matter if we do not have the basic dance at all because at the end of street dance is the expression of our soul, the embodiment of what our hearts feel. Do not ever feel shy or embarrassed to honestly follow what our hearts feel. Hear the music, feel it with your heart and then just let your body flow.

Welcome to the street dance world
